BA Hons Fashion Design (Year 3)

Today we went out to capture the final clips for our 3-minute video. Michael did the filming and Dan was the modelling the bag.
This is the fabric we received from Calhoun; we were expecting to be given more but as the deadline got closer we decided to use what we had but as lining instead of the main pattern on the front.
Lydia and I then created a prototype out of fabric. To start with we pinned all the pattern pieces to the calico, cut them out and sewed them together. We sewed the zip first, sandwiched between the lining and outer fabric, as this was going to be the most complicated part. Then the three pieces for outer bag were sewn together and the same for the lining. The two sides were then attached to the zip and turned inside out through a side of the bag. The sides were the last parts to be sewn up. We made several notes throughout the process about the order and some advice for creating the real bag. The actual bag will be a lot more complicated to make as we’ll need to take the thickness into consideration and the plastic may be difficult to work with.
From the final design Ryan and Dan created a prototype out of foam that was exactly the size they envisioned the bag to be. From this, Lydia and I were able to visualise the design a lot better. The four of us figured out and discussed how we wanted it to come together but as Lydia and I had a better understanding of fabrics we took charge. We got some pattern paper and drew out the pieces we needed; adding 1cm all the way around each to allow for the stitching.

After receiving the brief ‘Baggage Solutions’ our group were a bit stuck for ideas, so we decided to bring in five unique ideas each to share with the group to get some new inspiration.
Today we got to meet our group for the first time; Lydia and I from Fashion, Dan, Charlotte, Ryan and Michael from Product Design and Calhoun from Textiles. After talking for a while to get to know each other we set up a group chat so we could keep in contact. It was good to meet some people from other subjects.
