Coming up with a character style was probably the most difficult thing I have faced so far. I had so many different ideas going through my head and I wasn’t sure what I liked best so I decided to experiment with different ideas.

My designs started out very simplistic. The first drawing was inspired by some a novel I looked at in my early research. However I

I really liked my second to last design but realised it wasn’t quite perfect, after a bit of editing and making the tones warmer I much preferred my design.

I plan to use this somewhere in my graphic novel as a reminder of the photo and to be an actual picture the woman has of her and husband hung up on the wall.

I have decided to incorporate the 1920’s into my graphic novel; although I’m not planning on completely basing it in the 20’s I would like to take elements to inspire my creations. I gathered these images and tried to recreate them using different mediums. I focused on fabrics as I am a fashion student and I would like that to show through my work. I also got some pictures of 1920’s architecture as the novel I am going to create is focused around an architects wife. I feel these images give me a better understanding of the time.

After a morning of tutorials on story telling and illustration we got a private viewing of some of the rare and special books in the library. I got to view some graphic novels with fresh ideas that I’d never seen before but my favourite part was the blank book styles. They were created in all these crazy shapes and a lot of them were sewn together; some with plait detailing. I would really like to do something like this as it incorporates my fashion quite well.

Today we had an introduction to our field project. I received Graphic Novel and, after hearing about what to expect from the module, I’m looking forward to the next 5 weeks! After we went through the brief we walked down to the National Museum to get some ideas and inspiration for my graphic novel. I got to see the typorgaphies of Berndt and Hilla Becher. I studied this couple in A Level photography so it was pretty amazing to see them in person and the sketch books behind the images. It was even more impressive because they used black and white film so there’s no editing involved and it took a lot of work to get them lined up.

In preparation for my Field option tomorrow I went to the library to get some comics/ storybooks that I liked the look of. I wanted to get a range of different books to get lots of inspiration. I’m quite apprehensive as to what to expect as I haven’t done anything quite like this before but I’m looking forward to learning more about storytelling and experimenting with lots of different medias.
